SENTINEL - A PROJECT BY DAVID FERENCIK
This project is a personal homage to the short story "The Sentinel" written by Arthur C. Clarke in 1951. My goal was to capture the feeling from the book while also inserting my personal vision and design.
My concept was based around a retro futuristic reimagining of space travel in the year 1983. The story: we follow a routine space shuttle recon mission to the moon, when the crew unexpecting find a mysterious object "the Monument".
For this project I designed a futuristic yet retro space shuttle inspired by car designs in the 80's. Although the main visual focus of the project is "the Monument".
A massive geometric octahedron with a mysterious refracting material.
For the output of the project I created several posters.

Process
3D was done using Blender and GAEA. Since I wanted the "Monument" to have influenced the landscape of the moon in a strange alien way. I couldn't use a normal moon surface texture. So I created this strange erosion using GAEA.

Shuttle design breakdown
3D was done with Blender using hard surface tools including Hard Ops, Boxcutter and Kit Ops. I explored the main shape design in my sketchbook, then created the shape in Blender and sketched on top using Photoshop for the secondary details. Final detailing was done directly in 3D. I find this is a fast approach while allowing for exploration and creativity.
